I want to live a healthier, more eco-friendly life. So I think – no, I know – it’s time to say goodbye.
Plastic, we’re breaking up.
You’ve been here in my life for more than 20 years, and I hope that it won’t be another 20, 40 or 60 that you’ll continue to stay.
But unlike a boyfriend to whom I can say “We’re done,” plastic is a little trickier.
It’s everywhere in my life and in yours, too. Just recently, Greenpeace asked us to post pictures of ridiculous plastic packaging with its #BreakFreeFromPlastic social media campaign. While plenty of the social messages centered around the grocery store and our kitchens, the plastic overload doesn’t stop there.
So I ask you to stop for a second and look around. How much plastic do you see in front of you?
As I sit here in my nook, I see a number of items – bread in a plastic bag, chicharrones in a reused plastic take-out container, and vitamins in plastic containers, to name a few. If I look behind me into my kitchen, I see even more. And it continues as I look in my bathroom and garden.
It’s everywhere.
And while I do my best to recycle and reuse things like plastic take-out containers as alternate tupperware, I know I can do more.
My buying choices. My habits. My ability to give up some conveniences. They’re all part of the journey.
So to help guide me on my way, I’m building a list of all the products I have in my house and use on a frequent basis that contain plastic in some form or fashion. In my upcoming posts, I’ll go into detail on what plastics I found in each room and what alternatives I can turn to both locally and online.
Until then, let me know in the comments below if you’re thinking or have already started your journey to becoming plastic free!
